Ludhiana: Continuing with the drive against illegal constructions, the municipal corporation (MC) on Friday demolished an under-construction illegal colony in Sherpur area and four permanent encroachments on a road in Ghora Colony. The building branch officials said they had received a complaint against construction of the illegal colony, following which demolition drive was conducted on the directions of MC commissioner Sandeep Rishi. Assistant town planner (ATP-zone B) Davinder Singh said that there were around eight permanent encroachments in Ghora Colony, but only four could be demolished as rain interrupted work.

The other four encroachments will be removed in the coming days, he said. Activist Kuldeep Singh Khaira raised the issue of the illegal colony with the municipal corporation (MC) in December last year and the civic body had then recommended a ban on the registry of plots in this colony through the DC office. However, the construction work resumed in early August and the activist filed a fresh complaint.

In his fresh complaint, the activist mentioned that he had raised the issue on December 20, 2023, about an illegal colony in Block 30 of Baba Deep Singh Nagar, Sherpur Kalan, and acting on his complaint the MC had sealed the main gate of the colony and requested the police commissioner to file a complaint under the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation (Papra) Act. Also, a request letter was sent to the deputy commissioner to stop the registration of properties here, his complaint said. The developers were selling the plots, telling people that the same is being done after a discussion with the MC commissioner.
