Maui forest reserves, including Kula and Polipoli, will close in April for trail repairs and fuel mitigation work.

Attention nature enthusiasts and upcountry adventurers: Maui's forest reserves are about to go under the knife for some much-needed TLC. According to a recent announcement by the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), several sites, including the Kula State Forest Reserve and Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area, are closing for the entire month of April to allow for trail repairs and fuel mitigation work. This maintenance marathon kicks off Tuesday, April 1, 2025, and runs through Wednesday, April 30, per details outlined in a DLNR press release.

If you're one of those who had grand plans for springtime trekking or camping, well, you’re out of luck. All roads, hunting areas, activities that include hiking, biking, and all facilities associated with these areas will be sealed off quicker than you can say habitat restoration. On top of that, any permits for Polipoli Spring SRA during this time will be canceled.

The Waipoli Access Road, from the white gate to the Skyline Trailhead gate, is temporarily closed. If you need more info or want to check if your favorite spot is affected, you can contact the Maui Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) at 808-984-8100. If you see someone ignoring the closure signs, DOCARE is available at 808-873-3990.

Keep an eye on announcements, as closure times and dates might change without notice..
