Wodonga Raiders Cricket Club's new captain says the decision to leave Belvoir was his toughest sporting call. or signup to continue reading Matt Jaensch will lead Raiders in the 2025-26 Cricket Albury-Wodonga Provincial competition. "I've changed clubs a few times, but this is certainly the hardest decision I've had to make when it comes to sport, for sure," he acknowledged.
"I love Belvoir and have always loved the club, I love the people at Belvoir and have some amazing memories there and what we achieved over the last 10 years." The right-arm seam bowler joined in 2015-16, where it claimed its only Provincial premiership after moving from District in 2007-08. He claimed 6-44 after bowling a staggering 33 overs unchanged in the old 80-over format.
Jaensch has skippered a host of teams, both at club and representative level. "We lacked that experience, we didn't get our import last year from South Africia, so we've targeted a very experienced cricketer," Raiders' president Ben Stewart said. "He's still an elite player, he saw our list and liked the make-up of it, he can see some improvement straight away.
" Jaensch missed seven games last season, but still claimed 22 wickets at a miserly 8.91. He had the lowest average and economy rate (2.
25) of any bowler in the top 25. "In the end the opportunity was too good to turn down," Jaensch revealed. "You look at the young playing list, Will Noonan, Jack Stewart, Baxter Wilson, Lincoln Reed, Chad Brookes, these guys and more are primed and ready to learn.
"That void in leadership last year, that's why I've accepted this opportunity to share my knowledge of what I've learnt over the years to these younger guys and it's something I'm passionate about." And Raiders have also signed former junior international , who captained New City in CAW Provincial in 2022-2023. "He's a New Zealand under 19 international that has landed on our doorstep," Jaensch said.
"The club needed a wicketkeeper-batsman and he's playing footy at Raiders, so he will also add to our leadership. "We haven't lost anyone and Raiders knocked off (finalists) East Albury and St Patrick's on the run home so it's exciting times for the club." Raiders finished ninth last season, 20 points out of finals.
