Arsenal and Manchester United's hopes of signing Matheus Cunha have suffered a blow after the Brazilian reportedly agreed a contract extension with Wolves . Cunha has been in excellent form for Wolves this season, netting 10 goals in 19 appearances so far. Only six players have been more prolific Premier League goalscorers this campaign and Cunha has been attracting interest from a number of clubs .
Arsenal and United have both been linked with the forward, but it appears Cunha has decided to remain at Wolves as they continue their fight against relegation. Multiple reports claim that the 25-year-old has agreed to sign a new long-term deal at Wolves. The news will come as a major boost for Wolves and new boss Vitor Pereira, who replaced Gary O'Neil as head coach last month.
Pereira has made an unbeaten start to life at Molineux, picking up two wins and one draw in his firth three games in charge to leave Wolves one point above the bottom three. And Pereira has made it clear that the club "need" Cunha if they are to avoid being relegated to the Championship. "He is a special player," Pereira told Amazon Prime after Wolves beat Manchester United on Boxing Day.
"He can do things that can make the difference in small details. Matheus Cunha is a player, in my opinion, who can reach high standards in this league." When asked about Cunha potentially leaving the club, Pereira added: "I hope not, I hope not because we need him.
"He's come here with a lot of energy. He said to us it's been his dream for 18 years to come here and manage a team in the Premier League. You can see the impact, you can see the energy, how he can teach us things on the pitch.
I think he can help everyone show what we can do." Wolves will be without Cunha when they host Nottingham Forest on Monday after he was given a two-match ban and fined £80,000 following a fracas where he he appeared to strike an Ipswich staff member last month. In a statement, the FA said: "Matheus Cunha has been suspended for two games and fined £80,000 following the Premier League fixture between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town on Saturday 14 December 2024.
"The forward was charged with misconduct and it was alleged that he acted in an improper manner after the final whistle. He admitted the charge and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission. Full written reasons for this case will be published in due course.
