In a major setback, Najmul Hossain Shanto is likely to step down from Bangladesh captaincy after the ongoing South Africa series as per a Cricbuzz report. Shanto currently leads his country across the three formats. Shanto was appointed the captain by the Bangladesh Cricket Board earlier this year and led his country to a historic Test series win against Pakistan.
However, he expressed his desire to discontinue his role as a captain and already informed BCB of his wish. A BCB source told Cricbuzz, "Yes, he informed us that he is not ready to lead the side after the South Africa series." Shanto was expected to lead the team in the Champions Trophy next year and should he stick to his plan, Bangladesh now will have to find a new captain.
Mehidy Hasan could be handed the mantle in Test and ODI while Towhid Hridoy could find himself leading the team in the T20Is. Najmul confirmed the development to Cricbuzz. "Let's see what happens (as far as leading Bangladesh is concerned) because I am still waiting to hear it from the president (BCB).
" BCB president Faruque Ahmed is currently out of the country and a consensus is expected to be reached after his arrival. Bangladesh were handed a brutal whitewash against India followed by a one sided loss against South Africa in the first Test. Najmul captained Bangladesh in nine Test matches, recording three victories and six defeats, with his first Test series victory over Pakistan serving as the high point.
Bangladesh won three games and lost six in the nine ODIs he captained. He captained the team in 24 T20I matches and recorded 10 victories. Shanto is likely to lead Bangladesh in the second and last Test match of the South Africa series which starts from October 29.
