World-famous cult bakery Lune Croissanterie has opened its flagship bakery in Sydney, with fans forming massive queues down the street to get a taste of the shop’s phenomenal pastries. Video from the Lune Sydney store shows hundreds of excited patrons lining up around the block. Founded by engineer Dr Kate Reid in 2012 as a wholesale bakery, Lune initially supplied croissants to Melbourne espresso bars.
Running the business by herself, she went on to employ her brother Cam in 2013 to grow the brand in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Elwood. A glowing review of the pastries in the New York Times in 2016 shot Lune to international acclaim, calling them “the finest you will find anywhere in the world”. Reid had always enjoyed her morning croissants when she travelled to France for work trips as an engineer.
When she decided on a career change, she travelled to Paris to study under a top pastry chef and applied her engineering background to making the perfect croissant. The celebrated brand first announced their plans for a Sydney expansion in 2019. Five years later, the cult chain has opened in Rosebery in Sydney’s inner west.
The site is Lune’s largest store with dozens of pastry chefs working across the former industrial site in Rosebery Engine Yards. Described by fans as “one of the best things I’ve ever had in my life”, the croissants are known for being “precise and technically perfect”. Lune Croissanterie currently has six stores across Melbourne, Brisbane and now Sydney, with plans to open another premises in Martin Place.
