Mason Rudolph as the starting QB? Ben Roethlisberger thinks it could work.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a conundrum at quarterback if Aaron Rodgers does not sign with them. Could a true option really be Mason Rudolph going into the season as the starter for the team? Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger , who has notably not had smooth relations with Rudolph, endorsed Rudolph’s fit in the offense and believes he could work as the starter. “Mason [Rudolph] can get the guys the ball,” Roethlisberger said on Footbahlin .

“Mason can throw the ball. That’s never been a question. He can make decisions and get the ball out of his hand.

He’s not afraid to take shots down the field, either. That’s one of the things I think that, as you’ve watched Mason when he was here and then in Tennessee, he’s not one of these guys that gets nervous and just wants to get the ball out his hands right away. He’ll sit in there, and he’ll throw it down the field.

I think that’s what you’ve got to do when you have George Pickens and DK Metcalf. Those are deep down the field type guys.” Head coach Mike Tomlin also endorsed Rudolph’s chance at being the starting quarterback if the team can not sign a veteran or draft one of the top options in the 2025 NFL Draft class.

“The way he smiled in the face of adversity and delivered for us was significant. But not that I was shocked by it or didn’t think it was within his framework of capabilities. We’re excited about having him back, not only in terms of his talents, but the guy that he is.

He’s a really good teammate. He’s a really good football guy,” Tomlin said. Rudolph went 1-4 in his starts in 2024, throwing nine touchdowns and nine intercpetions while amassing 1530 over the year.

Now, Rudolph is back on the market and the Steelers could be one of his landing spots. Rudolph’s breakout three games came at the end of the 2023 season, where he led the Steelers from 7-7 to 10-7 and a playoff berth, where they would lose to the Buffalo Bills.
