Martin Brundle has shot down Jeremy Clarkson’s proposal to make F1 more entertaining. Many fans were left disappointed by Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix, which was plagued by a lack of overtaking as Max Verstappen took the chequered flag . The race only featured 15 passing manoeuvres after the first lap, down from 48 at the same venue in 2024 and 29 in 2023.
Furthermore, 11 of the 20 drivers finished in the same position they started in, prompting criticisms over the track. And former Top Gear host Clarkson has been one to hit out . “I’ve had an idea to make F1 racing more consistently exciting,” he wrote on X.
“Don’t use tracks where overtaking is difficult.” The 64-year-old is renowned for his outspoken ways, but pundit Brundle has responded. He bluntly rejected the suggestion, comparing F1 to other sports and acknowledging the Clarkson’s Farm presenter’s love of agriculture.
“Jezza it’s a bit like a harvest, sometimes you have to be patient,” he wrote back. “From four starts this season, we’ve had four different winners. Some football matches are nil-nil.
Some are last-minute 5-4 thrillers. That’s sport.” However, it seems the former Williams, Jordan, and McLaren driver isn’t completely against an overhaul, adding: “I know you love F1, really.
Change the cars, not the tracks.” Clarkson’s rant comes barely a fortnight after he took aim at Lewis Hamilton for his performance in China. He questioned how the veteran could win the sprint race in Suzuka only to struggle in qualifying and the Grand Prix itself.
“In the race itself, he was so slow he let his team-mate overtake, and then he was disqualified,” ranted Clarkson. “How is that possible? I can understand that a car might be quick at one track and the following weekend, at a different track, be useless. “But to go from hero to zero on the same track? It makes no sense.
