Marles won’t say if US pressure led to Port of Darwin U-turn

Login Defence Minister Richard Marles has revealed discussions with the United States over the Port of Darwin being in Chinese hands but refused to say if these were behind Labor’s U-turn on the port’s ownership. In 2015, the Northern Territory government issued a 99-year lease over the only deep-water port in northern Australia to the Chinese-owned Landbridge Group, sparking complaints from the national security establishment and the US.
