Marles won’t say if US pressure led to Port of Darwin U-turn

Defence Minister Richard Marles declined on four occasions to say what had occurred since late 2023 to change the policy on the port’s Chinese ownership.

In 2015, the Northern Territory government issued a 99-year lease over the only deep-water port in northern Australia to the Chinese-owned Landbridge Group, sparking complaints from the national security establishment and the US.
