Alexis Markowski put on a show in the second half on Tuesday, and it wasn’t just that smooth 3-pointer from the wing. The senior center scored 13 of her season-high 22 points in the second half of Nebraska’s 84-58 win against Southern for a 3-0 start to the season. This week Nebraska moved up two spots in the AP Top 25 to No.

21 for Nebraska’s highest ranking in 10 seasons. Markowski finished 8 for 13 shooting from the field. She was 2 for 4 beyond the arc.

In the opening five minutes of the third quarter, Markowski scored eight points, including a basket inside and a wing 3-pointer to help Nebraska build a 15-point lead. Natalie Potts added 17 points and 12 rebounds to extend the strong start to her sophomore season. She also has games of 17 and 14 points.

Alberte Rimdal, a Florida transfer, added 13 points to give the Huskers a third player in double-figure scoring. Markowski and Potts were part of Nebraska outscoring the Jaguars 44-24 in the paint. Nebraska was just 5 for 13 on 3-pointers.

Freshman guard Britt Prince was back in the starting lineup after missing the last game due a lower leg injury sustained in practice last week. Prince had four assists, making great passes inside to Markowski on several occasions. Her six points included a strong baseline drive in the third quarter.

The game was closer in the first half when Nebraska had some defensive breakdowns and Southern was hitting 3-pointers. Nebraska outscored the Jaguars 48-32 in the second half. Nebraska finished 49% shooting from the field (27-55).

Nebraska also outscored Southern by 19 at the free-throw line, going 25 for 36. Southern briefly had a lead in the first quarter, thanks to some good 3-point shooting in the first quarter, making three shots from beyond the arc. But with an 8-0 scoring to end the first half Nebraska had a 10-point lead at the break.

Southern (0-4) was led by senior guard Aniya Gourdine with 22 points, including 4 for 6 shooting on 3-pointers. Nebraska’s next game is Saturday against South Dakota (0-2) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Reach the writer at 402-473-7435 or bwagner@journalstar.
