Mariah Carey joined hosts Randy Jackson, Keith Urban, and Nicki Minaj for American Idol ’s 12 th season. A couple of years after her hosting gig, she revealed what she really felt about her experience in the hit reality show. Mariah Carey’s ‘American Idol’ experience wasn’t what she expected From the very beginning, it seemed that Carey was brought on to American Idol under false pretenses.

She explained in a resurfaced interview with Hot 97 that the original format of the show was supposed to be completely different. “I was the first person signed on,” Carey said. “Heaven forbid I look like I’m saying something negative, but honestly I thought it was going to be a three-person panel.

They gave me a nice dangling monetary moment. I was like, okay, Randy Jackson will be there, I’ve known him forever. This isn’t a big deal.

This will be nothing. But it wasn’t that. It was like hell.

It was like going to work every day in hell with Satan.” American Idol ’s once-traditional three-judge panel system was changed when Minaj was added to the team. Minaj and Carey famously butted heads over their critiquing styles, a situation that definitely added to Carey’s unfavorable opinion of the series.

Additionally, she joked that her own legal team set her up when it came to doing the program. “It’s not worth this much breath to go back to that horrible moment that my lawyers lured me into and made me sign my deal because they wanted to get that commission,” she told Variety about the show. “But other than that, it was f***ing perfect!” Would Mariah Carey return to ‘American Idol? Although there were a lot of things about American Idol Carey didn’t like, doing the show wasn’t all bad.

She was impressed by a few of the show’s contestants. So much so that she was genuinely heartbroken when a few of her favorites didn’t make the cut for political reasons. “I would prefer to put this person in a studio and record a record with them,” she said.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live , Carey also confided that she enjoyed some of the memes that came out of such a bleak time in her life. But despite the overwhelming negative experience, the “All I Want for Christmas” singer would host the show again. But under slightly different circumstances.

“I would have to really know who I was working with,” she said. “At that point, they set me with someone that I really didn’t know and I know the chemistry was awful, and basically, being that it’s over now, I’m very happy. I would do it again with someone like a Simon Cowell, maybe.

But the random person of the week that we’re going to put you with? No, thanks.” How contestants reacted to Mariah Carey’s ‘American Idol’ comments A couple of contestants commented on Carey’s remarks about the reality show. American Idol finalist Lazaro Arbos felt the show couldn’t have treated the singer with more courtesy.

“I’m honestly shocked she said that, because of all the times we were on the set filming and even when we got to the live shows she was always treated with respect and courtesy from the producers,” he said according to Billboard . Arbos believed that Carey’s more extreme words about the series, where she called American Idol abusive, were mostly because of Minaj. “I think that Mariah made those comments of Idol being abusive in regards to her arguments and disagreements with Nicki Minaj, but honestly there was no need for all that,” Arbos said.

“I don’t get why she felt that way because as far as I’m concerned she never really had to deal with Miss Minaj! She wasn’t even required to talk to her at all, whatsoever!” Meanwhile, contestant Devin Velez sympathized with the record-breaking artist’s feelings . He even seemed to take Carey’s side when it came to her feud on the show. “I can see why that would be frustrating for Mariah,” he said.

“She wanted to do her job and smile for the cameras, but it’s hard to do that when her fellow judges aren’t doing their jobs.”.
