Maren Morris opened up about a scary situation that she found herself in as a parent. The 34-year-old musician is a mom to Hayes Andrew , 4, who she shares with ex-husband Ryan Hurd . During an appearance on Sophia Bush ‘s Work in Progress podcast, Maren revealed that Hayes received death threats after she called out country star Morgan Wallen for his use of a racial slur in a 2021 video.
At the time, Maren pointed out the sexism in the response to Morgan ‘s behavior, noting that female artists would be “dropped, endorsements lost, social pariahs to music row.” “We keep them rich and protected at all costs with no remorse,” she wrote , with other musicians agreeing. The resulting backlash affected her son as well as her.

“It wasn’t death threats against me; it was against my son, too. So it’s like, ‘Oh wow, now we’re involving the kids,” she said, via The Hollywood Reporter . Maren added that the situation was “obviously scary” since she was new to motherhood, and her son was not even a year old at the time.
While the singer admitted that she “probably” wouldn’t take to a social media platform to speak her minds again, she didn’t back down from her beliefs. “Don’t be racist. Don’t be transphobic.
Don’t be homophobic. I still stand by that so if you’re expecting me to feel bad, no I [don’t]. In fact, the only thing that made me feel bad is realizing even in this community of music here in Nashville — and I still live here — it’s like, ‘Oh wow, who will go to bat for you were people of color and who will go to bat for them,’” she said.
