President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Monday tasked the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to improve the warning systems for the public whenever a natural calamity hits the country. ''Una, inaatasan ko ang DOST na pagbutihin ang kanilang warning system upang makapagbigay ng napapanahong babala sa mga panganib na dulot ng mga bagyo,'' Marcos said this during his visit to Talisay, Batangas.
(I have tasked the DOST to improve the warning system to give timely warnings on the possible danger brought by tropical cyclones.) A village in Barangay Sampaloc was hard hit by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine weeks ago. Marcos also directed DOST to work with the Department of the Interior and Local Government to ensure an effective way of communication whenever there is a tropical cyclone so that the safety of residents will be guaranteed.
The President had declared November 4, 2024 as a Day of National Mourning for the victims of heavy rains, flooding, and strong winds brought by Kristine. Government data showed that the death toll remained at 146, with 126 still for validation. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News.
