The PBA has already sought help from the proper authority regarding the alleged threats made against Barangay Ginebra's RJ Abarrientos that came on the heels of Gin Kings' loss to Meralco in Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner's Cup quarterfinals on Friday. League commissioner Willie Marcial said the PBA is already coordinating with NBI to tackle the situation and that the agency is also communicating with the Barangay Ginebra rookie regarding the matter. Marcial added he is also discussing the matter with Ginebra management.
"Kino-ordinate na natin ito sa proper authority, in this case sa NBI. Kinausap na nila si RJ tungkol dito," Marcial said in a statement. "Nagkausap na rin kami ni RJ at nagka-usap na rin kami ng management ng Ginebra.
" Marcial added that he also has the copy of the messages sent to Abarrientos following Ginebra's narrow 108-104 loss to the Bolts in Game 2, which sent the best-of-three series to a deciding Game 3 on Sunday. "Nakita ko rin 'yung messages, nasa akin na kaya nakipag-coordinate na rin tayo sa NBI. Pinoprotektahan din naman natin 'yung mga player natin sa ganyang mga bagay," Marcial said.
Against the Bolts in Game 2, Ginebra staged a fightback late in the fourth quarter with Jamie Malonzo sparking the rally and cutting what was once a 104-94 deficit to just 108-104 disadvantage with 34 seconds left. Newsome then missed out on a triple before Meralco committed a 24-second shot clock turnover, allowing their rival Ginebra to manufacture a potential game-tying four-point shot. Abarrientos, however, muffed the shot as Meralco lived to fight another day.
