Read More The ashes of legendary film actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar were immersed in the sacred waters of the Ganges at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar on Saturday morning. In a solemn ceremony attended by close family members, the final rites were performed at the revered Brahma Kund. The immersion was conducted with full Vedic rituals, as the sound of sacred chants resonated along the riverbanks.
The late actor’s sons, Kunal and Vishal Goswami participated in the ritual led by the family’s priest. They were accompanied by their relatives. Kunal Goswami, speaking after the ceremony, said, “The ashes have been immersed in the Ganges, and we pray for the peace of his soul through the blessings of Mother Ganga.
" & Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar passed away on April 4 at the age of 87, following a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at 4:03 am at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. Born as Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar rose to prominence as one of Indian cinema’s most iconic figures.
Fondly known as “Bharat Kumar" for his deeply patriotic roles in films like Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Shaheed, he became a defining face of socially-driven and nationalistic storytelling through the 1960s and 1970s. Beyond his success as an actor, he was also an accomplished filmmaker. His directorial debut, Upkar (1967), won the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film, setting the stage for a series of hits.
Purab Aur Paschim (1970) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974) further established him as a director who could deftly balance critical acclaim with commercial success. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a letter to Kumar’s wife, Shashi Goswami, expressed his deep condolences, writing: “The legendary actor and filmmaker showcased the pride of India in a powerful way through his films. His work will continue to inspire generations to work for the country and society.
" On April 5, Manoj Kumar was cremated with full state honours at Mumbai’s Pawan Hans crematorium. The funeral was attended by several notable personalities from the film industry, including Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Arbaaz Khan, all of whom paid their respects to the beloved icon of Indian cinema..
