The NPP in Manipur was battling a rift as seven MLAs were divided over continuing support to the Biren led government. BJP on its own has the majority. BJP is supporting the NPP led government in Meghalaya.
Last year the Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) with two MLAs in the Manipur assembly withdrew its support from the BJP-led state government. In the house of 60, BJP has 37 MLAs while JD(U) has one, there are three independents supporting the government. Five MLAs from.
Naga People's Front (NPF) is supporting the government. Ten Kuki-Zo tribal MLAs, including seven of the BJP, along with all the leading organisations of the community, have been demanding a separate administration or a Union territory for the tribals in Manipur. In October this year the state was caught in a leadership change tussle, around 19 BJP MLAs have moved the Central leadership seeking replacement of chief minister N Biren Singh.
There is speculation that a letter was submitted to the Prime minister's office recently by disgruntled MLAs. Leaked portions of the said letter showed the first signatures as that of Speaker Th Satyabrata, Ministers Th Bishwajit and Y Khemchand. Bishwajit and Khemchand are dissenters, Speaker Satyabrata is a loyalist of Biren Singh.
The letter is signed by 19 MLAs of the ruling party and was reportedly submitted on Wednesday. The letter was submitted after the first meeting was conducted between Meitei, Kuki and Naga MLAs at Delhi. The letter added that the need of hour is to examine the crucial factors which are hampering the initiation of dialogue and take action to create the conducive atmosphere to felicitate the same.
“In the light of above facts, we, the undersigned, implore again to take immediate action to start the peace dialogue with all stakeholders to save Manipur before it is too late. Commercial establishments have closed and shifted location of businesses out of the state because of the activities of miscreants and anti-nationals. Not only shortage but prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed, and the inflation rate is at an all-time high.
State Revenue Collection and Tax Collection have been greatly hampered, thus affecting the economy badly". In June this year a section of MLAs went to New Delhi to press for leadership change. In July last year Biren Singh resigned however irate people tore the resignation letter.
The Naga People’s Front (NPF) which has five MLAs and is part of the BJP led government has assured to continue supporting the Biren Singh led government in the state. NPF Manipur State Unit leader and minister Awangbow Newmai said,"NPF is one of the oldest allies of the BJP. At this critical juncture, withdrawal of support does not arise.
We will continue to stand with the BJP government and work jointly to find solutions to the crisis." (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel ).
