Mangaluru will host a two-day ‘tubers and turnips and green leafy vegetables fair’ on January 4 and 5. Organised by ‘Savayava Krishika Grahakara Balaga (R)’, the event is aimed at creating awareness on the health benefits of tubers, turnips and green leafy vegetables among consumers. Addressing media persons in Mangaluru on Thursday, GR Prasad, a representative of the organising committee, said nearly 350 varieties of tubers and turnips and 150 varieties of green leafy vegetables will be on display at the event.
He said that 16 farmers from Maharashtra, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala and nearly 100 farmers from various parts of Karnataka will bring diverse varieties of tubers, turnips, and green leafy vegetables to the fair. Stating that a majority of tubers and turnips can be grown even in drought-like conditions, he said they can be grown both in rural and urban areas. People can grow tubers and turnips in their terrace gardens also, he said.
When other crops fail due to the vagaries of nature, tubers and turnips support the farmers to tide over the situations and provide them income opportunities. The main intention of organising this event is to make tubers and turnips an important part of daily consumption, as they are a good source of nutrition, he said. Dishes made out of tubers, turnips and green leafy vegetables will also be part of this fair, he added.
