Mandal avoids procession, gives Rs 25k to Ekta Nagari family

Pune: Like other mandals, Utsav Ganesh Mitra Mandal from Ganjwe Chowk area on Shastri Road will follow a tradition, but this is a different and unbroken one. The mandal has been staying away from an immersion procession for many years and uses the money saved from not arranging for the paraphernalia for social work and donations to the needy. This year, the mandal donated Rs 25,000 to a family from Ekta Nagari area affected during severe flooding last month.

Its workers said that they unanimously decide every year before Ganeshotsav to stay away from spending money on processions on the first and last days. Working president Sudhir Kale said that social awareness has been at the centrestage for the mandal since the beginning. "Every year, we conduct a meeting of all our members ahead of Ganeshotsav to discuss the plans.



They express their views on various social themes that can be displayed during the festive days. This year, all were in favour of utilising the funds in a better way instead of spending it on processions," he added. Mandal president Atul Dharne said that this year the mandal has demonstrated a theme to create awareness among youth about the threat of drugs and anti-social activities.

"A live demonstration drew large crowds in the 10 days of this year's festival. We invited PMC's conservancy staff to perform aarti to increase our engagement with those working round-the-clock during Ganeshotsav," he added. The mandal erects its pandal to cause minimal problems to the road traffic.

"All these initiatives are steps towards ensuring the celebrations with minimum hassles," the workers said. Like the last years, at least 11 Ganesh mandals from Dhankawdi area have planned a joint procession on Tuesday to avoid traffic congestion and maintain harmony.
