Manchester United last week scouted Viktor Gyokeres ahead of the January transfer window. Days after new manager Ruben Amorim started work, United sent Sergio Souza - considered an expert in Scandinavian talent - to watch Gyokeres play, and score, for Sweden in Stockholm on Saturday night. Souza confirmed his attendance at the game via his Instagram account.
The Sporting Lisbon striker did not take long to add to his international tally, running only a through ball from Newcastle's Alexander Isak to fire low past former United keeper Martin Dubravka in the Serbia goal within the opening three minutes. Gyokeres is a wanted man across Europe, and United are understood to be among a host of potential suitors. However the striker has confirmed he is not looking to leave Sporting during the season.
He told Fotbollskanalen when asked about a possible January move: "It's not something I think about, nor something I give any importance to. It's just rumours, nothing concrete. "I want to finish the season at Sporting, I'm enjoying my time there.
I don't feel stressed about making a change in the future. We'll see when the time comes." Asked directly about following his former Sporting coach Amorim to Old Trafford, Gyokeres said: "[Amorim] probably already has strikers there.
.. It's fun but not something I attach any importance to because it's talk and nothing concrete.
" Asked about Amorim's departure from Sporting, Gyokeres added: “It's very sad that he's left, but of course we understand his decision. “He has of course meant a lot [to me] considering that he gave me that chance and that he made me develop so much. Now we look forward to working with the new coach.
” United are preparing to embark on a new era as Amorim takes charge for their Premier League fixture against Ipswich. He could be immediately boosted by a couple of injury returnees. Leny Yoro Summer signing Yoro is yet to feature in a competitive game for Manchester United.
The centre back suffered a fractured foot during preseason and has been working his way back to fitness ever since, it would appear that the Frenchman may be close to a return having returned to team training. Possible return: Ipswich, Sunday 24 November Lisandro Martinez Martinez was called home having briefly joined up with Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina squad, with the defender citing back pain. An assessment will be required to determine if he is able to take part in Amorim’s first game, with the left-sided Martinez potentially a key figure under the manager.
Possible return: Ipswich, Sunday 24 November Harry Maguire Maguire has been absent since sustaining a muscular injury in the goalless draw against Aston Villa. The defender suggested he would be sidelined for “a few weeks”. Possible return: December Kobbie Mainoo Mainoo was another to pick up an issue against Aston Villa.
He could yet bolster Amorim’s options against Ipswich. Possible return: Ipswich, Sunday 24 November Luke Shaw Plagued by injury, Shaw suffered a set-back in his recovery from his latest ailment during the final days’ of Ten Hag’s tenure and is unlikely to be available for selection in Amorim’s first few fixtures. Possible return: December Tyrell Malacia There is better news about fellow left-back Tyrell Malacia, though - the Dutchman was able to complete 45 minutes for Manchester United’s Under-21s against Huddersfield in the EFL Trophy last week and he could soon push for his first minutes for the first team in a year-and-a-half.
Possible return: Bodo/Glimt, Thursday 28 November.
