Football writer Manchester United ‘approached’ Sevilla winger Juanlu Sanchez in the last transfer window, according to a report by Spanish news outlet ABC . However, nothing materialised in the end and he stayed put in La Liga . The Red Devils could have seen him as someone to add more competition and depth to their attacking ranks.

He caught their eye playing in the Olympics for the Spain national team this summer in Paris and looks set for a bright future in the game. United will now need to wait until January if they are to rekindle their interest in the 21-year-old. He has been on the books at Sevilla for nearly a decade and is valued at £12.

Sanchez started his career with spells at Los Caminantes and San Alberto Magno before joining his current club back in 2015.

He has since risen up through the academy ranks at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán and has been a regular at various different youth levels for his boyhood team. The Spain youth international broke into Sevilla’s B team in 2019 when he was just 16 and went on to make 68 competitive appearances, chipping in with seven goals. He penned his first professional deal five years ago and hasn’t looked back since.

He made his first-team debut in December 2021 in a Copa Del Rey cup clash away at lower league outfit Andratx. The forward has since played 41 more times and has found the net on two occasions. Sanchez was given the green light to leave on loan for the first time when Mirandes came calling in 2022.

He spent the whole of the 2022/23 campaign with the Segunda Division outfit and was a key player. The Andalusia-born man was a regular there and played 38 matches altogether, chipping in with a couple of goals. He then went back to his parent club last year and has stayed with them since then.

United emerged as a potential next destination for him late last month but nothing materialised. Head coach Erik ten Hag is under pressure after two losses from their first three fixtures. They were beaten 3-0 at home by Liverpool last time out in what was a worrying result and performance.

However, they have made a poor start to the new Premier League season and need to start winning more games. Sanchez would have given United another option to pick from on the wing if they had been able to bring him over to Old Trafford.

It wasn’t meant to be though and his focus right now will be on getting as much game time as possible with Sevilla. The Red Devils are back in action this weekend following the international break with an away trip to Southampton. Their upcoming opponents were promoted from the Championship after beating Leeds United in the play-off final.

However, they haven’t won yet in the top flight. National World encourages reader discussion on our stories. User feedback, insights and back-and-forth exchanges add a rich layer of context to reporting.
