When this giant tank fell off a lorry in Manchester Road in November 1970 it led to what the Bolton Evening News described as ‘the town’s worst traffic chaos for many years’. Manchester Road, Bolton, 1970 (Picture: Newsquest) Police were forced to seal off a stretch of Manchester Road from Orlando Bridge to Weston Street for more than four hours after the tank toppled off the lorry and fractured a gas main. Queues of vehicles stretched from Green Lane back into the town centre.
One policeman said he could not remember the situation being so bad ‘since Bolton Wanderers were in the First division’..
