Manchester City footballer Kerstin Casparij made a pro-trans statement after scoring her team’s first goal by kissing a trans rights wristband. Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of a woman under the Equality Act 2010 was based on ‘biology’ alone, thereby excluding trans women. The decision has sparked protests across the UK, and on Sunday (20 April), during Manchester City’s game against Everton, Casparij made a clear stand for trans rights by kissing her trans flag-coloured wristband after scoring a goal.

She later took to Instagram to explain why.“Sometimes there are bigger, more important things than football”, the 24-year-old wrote. “You are an absolute inspiration. Standing up for what you believe in on a public stage. 10/10”, one comment read.

Another read: “Incredible player, even more incredible human being using your platform for the greater good.” Others thanked her for using her voice to “protect the dolls always”. “Dolls” is a commonly used term among the LGBTQ+ community to describe transgender women.

The term has its roots in Ballroom culture.The Supreme Court ruling could have wide-ranging implications for the trans and non-binary community across the country.
