Manchester Airport started removing barriers today in a big change for drivers using pick-up and drop-off zones.

Barriers at the exits to Manchester Airport’s pick-up and drop-off zones will be removed between Wednesday 26 March and Wednesday 2 April. Airport bosses announced the new barrierless system last month which will use cameras to identify cars by their numberplates. Manchester Airport say the new system will "improve the overall experience" by "streamlining the process" for drivers.

They say it will reduce congestion and help people avoid increased charges from having to wait to leave the zones. Motorists will now have to pay for their short-stays online or over the phone before midnight the next day. Frequent users, such as taxi drivers, can set up an auto-pay account.

uk It will be managed through an automatic number plate recognition system like those already in use at some other airports and bridges and tunnels. These cameras will identify cars by their registration number and automatically record who has used the pick-up or drop-off zone. The change was announced last month, when the airport said it would be put in place in late March.

The new barrierless system will be put in place through a phased process between Wednesday, March 26 and Wednesday, April 2. The change will take place at one terminal at a time, with signs at each zone will let people know what steps they need to take.
