Taking a bike without the owner’s consent has cost a man £250. Benjamin Chapman admitted walking off with Trek Roscoe 6 following a dispute including the cycle’s owner in Spalding on August 1 of last year. Prosecutor Turan Sunat told Boston Magistrates’ Court the incident stemmed from an altercation between a group involving the 41-year-old defendant.
“What happened at the end of the incident was the defendant taking the pedal cycle,” he added. “I understand the value would be between £600 to £1,000. The bike has not been recovered.
” In defence, Beris Brickles said Chapman took the cycle away from the scene but it was another man who ‘disposed’ of the bike. “The circumstances were that the owner of the bike leant it to a third party,” he said. “An altercation between a group of people took place that led to the owner being contacted.
“The owner came and there was a confrontation between a lot of people. “At the end of the incident my client pushed the cycle for a short part and abandoned it two or three streets later. “A third party known to the group has taken the bike which my client intended to leave.
The action of the person who disposed of it is down to him alone.” Chapman, of Albion Street, Spalding, admitted to taking the bike without consent when he appeared in court on Wednesday (April 9). He was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
No order for compensation was made..
