In a season straight from hell for the Manchester United first team, the youngsters have been a breath of fresh air in all age groups. Man Utd’s U18s are dominating and the best talent at the U21s group is out on loan hoping to prove themselves, while some have already broken through. Under Ruben Amorim, Chido Obi has become a first-team player, Ayden Heaven has shone beyond expectations, and Harry Amass got his long-awaited senior debut.
Now, Amorim has been told that he has another wonderkid in the youth ranks just like Kobbie Mainoo and he’s in the form of his life just as Mainoo’s contract negotiations become tricky. Even though his current position under Amorim is unclear, there aren’t many better at United in doing the simple things right and making difficult things look simple.
However, Mainoo’s contract talks have become an unnecessary distraction in recent days with the player’s future hanging in the balance. If there is disagreement over the wages and United are forced to cash in, they can do so in the knowledge that they’ve future-proofed themselves, as Kone’s presence could be key in strengthening United’s hand in negotiations. Watching Man Utd U21s’ in their rivalry game away at Leeds, Bradford namechecked Sekou Kone as a player whose skill set is similar to Mainoo’s.Kone scored against Leeds for his first goal in Man Utd colours since arriving in the summer in a highly-touted but unexpected move. Sekou Kone is Ineos future-proofing Man UtdAt first glance, Kone didn’t look anywhere near the physical levels required when he arrived at Old Trafford but in quick time, he’s becoming a shining example of Ineos’ transfer policy.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s insistence on finding the “next Mbappe” instead of chasing the current one has led the club to aggressively enter the youth market. In the likes of Diego Leon, Sekou Kone, and Chido Obi, to name a few, that policy will bear fruit in the future but early signs are already visible. Kone, in particular, has come on leaps and bounds in his game despite an injury setback.
The upcoming pre-season might well be the moment he grabs his chance, especially if the likes of Casemiro leave and in Man Utd fans’ worst nightmare, Mainoo does too. Starting out with a comparison to Mainoo certainly isn’t the wrong way to go about it for Kone!.
