Paul Scholes has revealed that a Manchester United player demanded a face-to-face meeting at the club's Carrington training ground after taking issue with his criticism. The Red Devils icon claims he was contacted earlier this year by an unhappy member of Ruben Amorim 's squad, but the confrontation ultimately didn't happen. Scholes is among the former United players who seldom shy away from criticising the current crop for the club's staggering decline since 2013.
The former midfielder lifted 11 Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford as part of a 25-trophy haul in all competitions. Now, United will be fortunate to finish as high as 11th in the English top flight as a second successive disastrous campaign trickles to a close. Roy Keane , Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney are among the other United legends turned pundits who haven't minced their words about the state of the club.
And Scholes has dropped a bombshell admission that he was directly approached by one of the current playing staff over his previous unfavourable comments. "[On whether players have a go at his comments] Players can be a little bit touchy these days," Scholes explained on The Overlap Fan Debate . "I had a player [from Manchester United ] this year who contacted me and wasn't happy with some of the things I'd said.
"He wanted to meet me at the training ground, and I said, "Of course, no problem", and gave him my number, but he never got back to me. "I would have done it. If I'm saying things I believe and he wants me to explain why, it wouldn't have been a nice conversation, but I said if they or anyone else has a problem, there's my phone number.
" Scholes didn't back down as a result of the interaction, insisting that players should not be bothered by external noise and the opinions of pundits. He added: "What we say [as pundits] shouldn't affect a player. The only people who should affect the players are the manager, the coaching staff, and their teammates.
"Whatever is said on TV should be taken with a pinch of salt. I'm not even sure how many players these days watch football and watch what we're saying. "There was one United player who obviously took a bit of offence to what I said, but you just deal with it.
If things need an explanation or a meeting over a tea or coffee, I'd be happy to give it.".
