Man United have their sights set on a two-time Champions League winner

Manchester United are hoping to kickstart Ruben Amorim’s first full summer transfer window with a blockbuster move for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde. It has been a hugely disappointing season for United, arguably their worst since relegation from the top-flight since 1974, and wholesale changes are expected to take place this summer as the club look to make strides towards achieving their ambitious goal of winning the league title by 2028. The Red Devils need to win the Europa League to have any hope of playing European football again next season but nevertheless remain one of the most well supported clubs in world football and an attractive proposition for many of the best players on the planet due to their rich history of silverware, phenomenal fan base and their ambitious plans for the future which include a state of the art new stadium, which will become the biggest in English football.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, United chiefs are planning a 100 million euro (£85m) swoop for Uruguayan international Federico Valverde. The publication notes that scouts at Old Trafford are hugely impressed with the midfielder’s versatility, physicality, and ability to get into the opposition's box and score key goals, something which the team has lacked hugely this season, with Bruno Fernandes being the side’s only consistent contributor this term after winger Amad Diallo’s injury. This season, Valverde has appeared in 46 matches, registering eight goals and seven assists, figures that reflect his impact on the Merengues.

Over the course of his career, the 26-year-old has won three La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey and two Champions Leagues while making the Team of the Season on two occasions. He is central to Madrid’s plans going forward and is renowned for his incredible leadership in the dressing room, but could be seeking a new challenge in England after winning everything there is to win in Spanish football. Man United have been hugely reliant on Portuguese playmaker Bruno Fernandes throughout the campaign and if it wasn’t for their captain's contribution of eight goals and nine assists it could be an even grimmer set of circumstances heading into the final furlong of the campaign.

His future will likely depend on the ambition of United in the coming windows, but in Valverde he would potentially have a midfield partner that can provide him with defensive protection while also taking away some of the goalscoring burden. United face a number of huge decisions in midfield with Kobbie Mainoo stalling over a new contract, Casemiro entering his final year next term, Mason Mount struggling with injuries and Christian Eriksen looking almost destined to depart on a free transfer by the summer. It is worth noting, however, that Valverde is under contract in the Spanish capital until 2029 and won’t be sold on the cheap due his high importance in Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
