Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has criticised Manchester United fans for targeting Phil Foden and his mother during the derby on Sunday. The Manchester Derby at Old Trafford finished in a goalless draw after both teams failed to find an opening. Reflecting on the Manchester Debry, City coach Guardiola hit back at United fans who taunted Foden during the match with their taunts that also involved the mother of the English midfielder.
The Spaniard said the fans should be “ashamed” of their act. “Lack of class. But it’s not United, it’s the people, you know?" Guardiola said.
“We are so exposed in the screen in world football - managers, owners, and football players especially. Honestly, I don’t understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil, it’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed..
." Some Manchester United fans were heard chanting “Your mum is a fat s**g” at Foden during the local derby. Besides being targeted by fans, 24-year-old Phoden had a game to forget as he created just one chance in the match and his two shots were away from target.
He was replaced by Jeremie Doku in the 58th minute. Phoden had a brilliant 2023-24 season, but he hasn’t managed to replicate that form this time, with only seven goals and two assists in 25 Premier League matches. Despite both teams failing to score and putting up a display that has been severely criticised by experts for lack of quality, Guardiola had no complaints against Foden or his other players.
“We put players with a sense of goal, with Omar [Marmoush] and Phil [Foden], and after good deliveries with [Ilkay] Gundo and Kevin [De Bruyne] close to them, with the two strikers, a lot of process, the passes with Bernardo [Silva], with [Mateo] Kova, with [Ilkay] Gundo. “Always we have lived these many years with the ball, to make a good process from behind, to make a good high pressing, we were really good with our intensity, long balls, our central defenders in Josko [Gvardiol] and Ruben [Dias] were brilliant, Nico [O’Reilly] until the last minutes when he was tired was really good as well. So in those terms, we are really, really satisfied.
” Man City were without their star striker Erling Haaland, who was out injured ..
