The 52-year-old suspect was held after officers were called to a house in Braemar Avenue, Southport, at 11.50pm on Sunday. Paramedics attended and found a man in his 70s who was dead.
Merseyside Police said a post-mortem examination will take place to establish the cause of the death, which is being treated as unexplained. The next of kin are aware. Officers are carrying out house-to-house, witness and CCTV inquiries in the area.
Detective Inspector Alan Nuttall said: “Inquiries are in the very early stages as we seek to establish the circumstances of what has taken place and we would urge people not to speculate while those inquiries remain ongoing. “We are carrying out a number of lines of inquiry and would ask anyone who was in the area of Braemar Avenue on Sunday night or saw or heard anything or has any information which could assist our investigation to contact us. “We are also keen to speak to anyone in the area who has CCTV that covers the area of Braemar Avenue or any taxi or delivery drivers or motorists who were in the vicinity who think they may have captured something significant on their dashcam.
