Surat: Kapodra police arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman and abetting her suicide, after she took her own life in the early hours of Saturday. After the woman's body was brought out of the Tapi, her family took the funeral procession to Kapodra police station on Sunday, to demand justice. During their investigation, police found that the woman had been taken to a hotel by two men at about 4am on Saturday.

According to a FIR filed by the victim's father, the accused, Kano Parmar, who is married with two children, had threatened and raped his daughter for over six months. On Saturday, Parmar had allegedly called the woman. She left home at about 3.

30am and went to a spot near a school in Kapodra. Parmar arrived there with his friend Rohit Dhumadiya and took the woman to Panvel Hotel in Utran. Parmar then spent an hour with the victim and dropped her off near the school.

The victim walked through the lanes near the river and jumped in to die by suicide. Her body was fished out by the fire brigade and police at about 9am. Kapodra police inspector M R Solanki told TOI: "We traced CCTV footage from her home and her last sighting.

There was a gap of one hour where she was not seen. We learned that she had spoken to an auto driver. Our teams questioned many drivers.

One of them told us that he had seen the woman asking another driver for help, to talk over the phone. We found that driver and learned that the victim had spoken to Parmar. We then detained him, and he revealed the chain of events.

" Parmar claimed that the woman wanted to marry him as they had been in a relationship for the past few months. Police are investigating what happened inside the room that led the victim to jump into the river. "The victim's father alleged that Parmar had threatened and blackmailed the victim, saying he would besmirch her name in the community.

She was thus disturbed and died by suicide. The victim used to speak to Parmar over social media from her mother's phone. We have seized Parmar's phone and are investigating the matter further," a police official said.
