Man finds rare ‘rust-free’ 1970 Plymouth in barn abandoned for 40 years – but gets a shock under the hood

A RARE classic car has been found abandoned after some 40 years - completely rust free. An incredible Plymouth Superbird - a legend among gearheads for its NASCAR prowess - has been sat in a warehouse since the late 1970s or early 1980s. Originally released in 1970 just as NASCAR changed its homologation rules, the company were forced to make one road-legal example for every two dealerships in the US if they wanted to compete.

To that end, they ordered a total of 1,920 units, while records show Plymouth put together 1,935 cars . Of the 1,935 Superbirds produced in 1970, only 135 were equipped with the 7.0-litre V8 engine, and of those, only 77 rolled off the assembly line with a three-speed automatic gearbox.



And some claim only 15% of the cars were finished in B5 Blue, such as this example. According to a report by Auto Evolution, this Superbird has changed owners quite a few times over the years, but has seemingly been left parked up where it currently sits for some 40 to 45 years.

The car was reportedly repainted at some point and is still rust-free, but the original vinyl top is missing and the interior was gutted. The Superbird can hit up to 200 mph - which was set in March 1970 at Talladega, a NASCAR record at the time - and can reach 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. To many younger gearheads, the Plymouth Superbird is best known for its animated form in the 2006 Disney Pixar film Cars.

This comes as another classic car that can usually pass hands for around $56,000 is available to buy at a pinch. An AMC Rambler from 1969 that's covered in dust and grime is up for sale at a suspiciously low price.
