Man denied bond in 2020 downtown slaying of CofC official's husband

A 20-year-old man was denied bond in connection to a fatal armed robbery that he allegedly took part in as a teenager.

A 20-year-old man was denied bond in an armed robbery and homicide that he allegedly took part in as a teenager. Due to the "seriousness of the charges" against Darcellus Fishburne, Judge Roger Young on Nov. 5 denied his defense's motion to set bond, filed six months ago.

Fishburne, of North Charleston, faces one count of armed robbery, three counts of attempted armed robbery and one count of murder after a March 2023 grand jury indictment. He is charged in connection to an alleged robbery spree through downtown Charleston on July 17, 2020, that left one man dead. Tom DiLorenzo, the 63-year-old husband of the then-newly hired College of Charleston provost, was shot and killed while taking an early-morning walk with his wife.



Fishburne, along with two other teenaged accomplices, allegedly drove from North Charleston to the peninsula with the intent to rob people, according to prior reporting from The Post and Courier . While their identities were not initially released at the time of arrest because they were juveniles, all three individuals are now older than 18 and face criminal charges as adults, according to prior reporting from The Post and Courier and current court records. 5. The third teen, Jaylen Grant, was the dedicated driver, said Shealy. The woman identified Wilson as the individual who pointed a firearm at her while she was loading her car on Archdale Street, Shealy said.

The teens fled the scene and allegedly robbed a 20-year-old construction worker at the corner of Calhoun and St. Philip streets, according to prior reporting from The Post and Courier. When Wilson and Fishburne allegedly came upon DiLorenzo and his wife near King and Clifford streets, they held the couple at gunpoint and demanded money, according to prior reporting from The Post and Courier.

After stating he didn't have any money, DiLorenzo was shot in the left side of his chest, Shealy said. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Video surveillance footage shows a person who looks like Wilson exit a vehicle with a gun and walk ahead of Fishburne toward DiLorenzo.

DiLorenzo's wife corroborated the video, citing Wilson's clothing, according to prior reporting from The Post and Courier.
