Surat: The Limbayat police booked a 25-year-old married man for raping a woman who tried to end her life by consuming acid in Aug. According to details, the accused and the woman were neighbours, and he lured her with the promise of marriage a year ago. The accused promised her that he would divorce his wife.
In Feb this year, he eloped with her and took her to Delhi, where they stayed for one month. As a complaint of her abduction was filed with the police, he returned to Surat and promised to marry her within three months. Consequently, the woman's mother withdrew her complaint.
In May, he again eloped with the victim. On Aug 17, he called the woman's mother and told her that she consumed acid and was admitted to SMIMER Hospital. On reaching the hospital, her mother found that she could not speak due to damage to her vocal cords.
After a long treatment, the woman was discharged in Sept. After deliberations with family members, the woman's mother finally filed a complaint of rape, abduction, and criminal intimidation against the accused. Chauhan is on the run.
Police said the woman's speech is impaired..
