Man behind 51-theft spree arrested

Surat: Detection of crime branch (DCB) sleuths have apprehended an alleged serial thief responsible for at least 51 thefts since 2009. Vijay Makwana , who is from Bhavnagar, came to Surat to meet his brother, who is lodged in Lajpore jail for theft. During his three-month stay in Surat, he allegedly carried out 18 thefts in Rander, Adajan, Puna, Varachha, Amroli, and other areas.

Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Bhavesh Roziya told TOI: "The accused is a serial offender and works alone. After committing a crime in one district, he would go to another district to evade police action. We have found 33 offences registered against him in Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Amreli, Anand and Surendranagar districts since 2009.



In the last three months, he committed 18 thefts in offices, stores and shops in Surat. We have arrested him based on technical and human surveillance." Arvind Makwana, the accused's brother, has been incarcerated in Lajpore Jail for the last six months.

He allegedly stole Rs 3 lakh from a finance company's office in Puna. Vijay camped in Surat to meet his brother in Surat jail for the last three months. He was also trying to get him released from jail.

During his stay, he could not resist striking at one shop or office after another. Police seized valuables worth Rs 2.37 lakh from Vijay, including cash, gold and a phone.
