Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch arrested a 38-year-old resident of Moshi on Saturday for stealing gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 16.92 lakh from his relative 's house on March 31. A complaint was registered with the Bhosari MIDC police on April 11, after the flat owner, Jagadish Telasinge (39) of Moshi, discovered that gold and silver jewellery was missing from the locker of his cupboard.
A crime branch team led by inspector Suhas Avhad checked the CCTV cameras in the complainant's housing society and found the latter's relative, Gangadhar Telasinge (38) of Moshi, leaving the society on March 31. "We took Gangadhar into custody from a BRTS bus stop at KBS Chowk and recovered the booty from his possession," Avhad told TOI. Avhad stated that Gangadhar and the complainant are distant relatives and good friends since childhood.
The complainant works as an engineer with a private company, and Gangadhar also works in a private company in the Pimpri Chinchwad area. "On March 31, when the complainant went to his workplace, Gangadhar went to his flat and entered inside using a spare key. He stole the gold and silver jewellery from the cupboard and returned home," Avhad said.
The officer mentioned that the complainant did not realise the theft until he checked the locker in the cupboard on April 11. "When we checked the CCTV footage, we noticed Gangadhar in the complainant's building. We became suspicious as Gangadhar should have been at his workplace at that time," the officer said.
Avhad said that Gangadhar claimed he did not know why he stole the jewellery from the complainant's house. "We even asked him whether he stole the jewellery to repay any debts. But, Gangadhar denied borrowing any money from anyone.
Our investigations are ongoing," Avhad said..
