Man arrested for breaking into apartment, assaulting woman asleep in Southeast Portland

Portland police had received reports of a man climbing fences and balconies of residences in the area.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A woman asleep in her apartment was assaulted by a man who broke in early Wednesday morning. The man was chased out by another occupant in the apartment and subsequently placed in custody, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Portland police had responded to the area of Southeast 30th Avenue and Southeast Schiller Street near the apartment around 11:30 p.m., after receiving reports of a man climbing fences and balconies of residences in the area.



Officers searched the area but could not locate him, police said. Five hours later, officers received reports of a burglary at an apartment in the same area. After arriving, they learned that a man had broken in and assaulted a woman while she was sleeping.

The woman was transported to local hospital for treatment, Portland police said. Detectives do not believe that there are any more victims in this case, but anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Wendi Hamm at wendi.hamm@police.
