Amid mounting political and public uproar over the Supreme Court’s cancellation of over 25,000 teacher appointments in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pledged to protect the jobs of those she calls deserving. The court order, passed due to large-scale irregularities in the 2016 recruitment by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC), has sent shockwaves across the state’s education system.Addressing affected teachers, Banerjee said, “As long as I’m alive, no one will lose job.
” She demanded clarity from the Supreme Court on who qualifies as “deserving” and cited the example of the NEET medical entrance exam. “There were serious allegations in NEET too, but the entire examination wasn’t scrapped. Why is Bengal being singled out?” she questioned.
She also invoked the Vyapam scam in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, stating that justice remains elusive in that case despite severe criminal allegations. “In Bengal, the system is being targeted because you’re scared of Bengal’s talent,” she alleged. The Supreme Court, in its order last week, declared that the 2016 recruitment was riddled with manipulations and fraud.
The bench noted severe irregularities including “rank jumping”, appointment of out-of-panel candidates, unauthorized selections bypassing the commission’s recommendations, and destruction of OMR sheets — all of which compromised the credibility of the process.“The WBSSC initially tried to cover up the lapses. The scale of manipulation makes verification nearly impossible.
The entire process was intentionally compromised,” the court remarked. While candidates found not guilty of wrongdoing won’t need to return their salaries, their appointments will still stand cancelled. The court has directed the state to restart the recruitment within three months.
Mamata accuses Opposition of conspiracyFiring back politically, Banerjee accused the BJP and CPM of orchestrating a conspiracy to “collapse the state education system” and target her government. “You have people everywhere. But don’t snatch jobs to target me.
Remember, an injured tiger is more dangerous,” she warned. She reassured affected teachers that the state government will explore all options. “If the Supreme Court gives clarity, we will comply.
If not, we’ll find another way. Suffer for two months, not 20 years. I’ll even compensate for that,” she said, promising not to let deserving candidates “beg”.
