Ludhiana: With the 10% rebate on payment of property tax ending on September 30, civic officials are trying their best to achieve their annual target. Almost as soon as he joined, MC commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal stressed upon recovery of dues to bolster finances of the struggling municipal corporation . Officials claim to have earned Rs 12 crore since Dachalwal took charge and expressed the hope of generating at least 70% of their annual target revenue.

As of now, the civic body has recovered around Rs 53 crore against the annual target of Rs 150 crore. Officials said that they had not received salaries for August and had been told that they would have to recover the dues if they wanted salaries on time. MC superintendent Vivek Verma said, “We are approaching large taxpayers and honest taxpayers who clear their dues before September-end.

Besides, we are making phone calls and sending messages to taxpayers. Field staff are visiting some of the property owners for tax collection.” Meanwhile, MC officials complained that they failed to generate property tax from departments like Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT), Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (Glada), PWD and the judicial complex.

“Whenever we approach LIT and Glada, they say they’ve given a loan to the MC and the dues can be adjusted against the same,” an official said. He added Glada gave Rs 20 crore to the MC a few years back while LIT also provided financial assistance to the civic body. Officials said that they have also been given targets for other branches, especially the tehbazaari branch.

Recently, assistant commissioner Jasdev Sekhon convened a meeting with tehbazaari staff, where targets were set for all zones. Target for zones A, C and D has been set at Rs 50 lakh, while for zone B it is Rs 55 lakh.
