Eggs are often hailed as the perfect start to a weekend breakfast , but achieving that perfectly fried egg can be tricky, with many ending up with an overcooked or rubbery mess stuck to their frying pan. However, ChihYu Chiang, the cook and founder of I Heart Umami, has shared an ingenious hack to whip up the perfect fried egg recipe easily, all without needing to use a frying pan and lots of oil. ChihYu suggests using an air fryer as a quick and hassle-free alternative to traditional stovetop frying.
She said, “Making fried eggs in the air fryer is a fast, easy and better alternative to stovetop cooking.” She highlighted the benefits of this approach: “Crispy fried eggs with creamy yolks are ready in minutes and with minimal cleanup.” Not only does this method radically simplify the process, but it also offers a healthier option by significantly reducing oil use and cutting down on fat and calories.
The key advantage of using an air fryer is the even cooking it provides, resulting in a rich and creamy textured egg. ChihYu raved over the results: “These air-fried eggs couldn’t be simpler, and they are perfect every time: crispy on the outside, with a creamy, runny yolk inside.” The only ingredients you will need for this are one egg and some oil spray.
For the method, she advised simply spraying a small tray with oil (or grease with butter), placing it in the air fryer at 200C, and preheating for five minutes. It’s fine to opt for olive oil or butter for these air fryer eggs, just make sure you spray or grease the tray thoroughly to prevent sticking. Finally, crack an egg into a small bowl or mug, and when the tray is hot, carefully pour it onto the preheated tray.
Slide the tray into your air fryer at 180C for a duration that suits how you like your eggs done. ChihYu suggested: “Air fry for three minutes for a sunny side up or over-easy egg. If you prefer a medium egg yolk, add one minute to the cooking time.
” Bear in mind that cooking times can vary with the size and initial temperature of the egg; smaller eggs or those closer to room temperature will cook quicker. When it’s ready, simply remove the tray from the air fryer, use a spatula to gently free the egg, and you’re all set to enjoy a flawlessly creamy fried egg..
