Getting your yorkies, meat and potatoes –not to mention the greens and gravy – to the table at the same time demands military precision. But for younger generations, it seems that the heat of a Sunday roast in the kitchen is too much to handle.

Nearly half of 18 to 24-year-olds say they would be too nervous to attempt a Sunday lunch for friends or family. As energy-efficient airfryers have taken over conventional ovens as the third most-used kitchen appliance – after toasters and microwaves – it is perhaps no surprise that many feel their cooking ability is not up to scratch. And with 35 per cent of those aged 18 to 44 so nervous about ruining expensive foods such as fish or steak that they avoid cooking them altogether, rising food inflation may also have a part to play. In response to the results of its survey of 2,000 people, Asda is launching a concierge service to help aspiring chefs improve their cooking skills.

Shoppers can sign up for one-to-one advice on the phone this week from chef Kate Austen, who has worked for Gordon Ramsay and in Michelin-starred restaurants. She said: ‘I’m used to working with premium ingredients..
