The state health services organisation (Okypy) has marked today as a milestone as major upgrade works commence at Archbishop Makarios III hospital, in Nicosia. The project aims to enhance healthcare services while creating a modern, safe and welcoming environment for children, parents and medical professionals , Okypy said in an announcement. Funded under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, the project includes the design, construction, and a 12-year maintenance period for new and renovated hospital facilities.
Construction began on Friday with site preparations, and completion is scheduled for September 2026. “This is a significant investment in healthcare, designed to transform the hospital experience by prioritising the needs of children and their families,” the announcement added. A new building will be constructed on the southern side of the existing complex, comprising a basement, ground floor and two upper floors .
The ground floor will house the new paediatric emergency department, fully equipped with examination beds, a resuscitation room, an operating theatre, an isolation ward, a plaster room and a playground. The first floor will accommodate the paediatric neurology unit and the rare diseases and genetics clinic. Facilities will include specialised examination rooms, a psychologist’s office, a breastfeeding room, developmental monitoring areas, and short-stay inpatient wards.
The rare diseases clinic will also feature consultation rooms, nursing care areas, and a play space for young patients. The second floor will house the burns and surgery department specifically designed for paediatric medical treatment. The children will be able to stay in single and double wards.
Additionally, extensive renovations are planned for the existing gynaecology clinic, maternity wards, and the paediatric surgery clinic to create modern, functional spaces. The gynaecology clinic will feature new single and triple-occupancy rooms with private bathrooms . The maternity wards will include eight single, eight triple, and two quadruple rooms, as well as dedicated breastfeeding areas.
The implementation of this project represents another significant step in the modernisation of Okypy, the organisation stated. “With continuous improvements and infrastructure upgrades, we are committed to delivering high-quality healthcare services that fully meet the needs and expectations of the public,” the announcement concluded..
