Italian media outlets have reported that the 39-year old went missing on Friday afternoon while hiking the third stage of the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara, between Masua and Cala Domestica. It is understood that the man had been hiking with his brothers, but has not been seen since after splitting up with them.

The search operation is ongoing. Italian national broadcaster RAI has reported that an Alpine Rescue team and drivers are involved in the search, along with a search and rescue helicopter and piloted drones equipped with thermal imaging technology. In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs said they are "aware of the case and are providing consular assistance.
