Spain and Portugal have been hit by widespread power outages, with disruptions affecting major cities and transport networks. Spanish power grid operator Red Eléctrica confirmed the blackouts on Saturday, saying the outage impacted the country’s “peninsular” system. Reports indicate that neighbouring Portugal has also been affected.

In Madrid, traffic lights were left non-operational, and parts of the underground railway system were evacuated. The disruption also forced the suspension of play at the Madrid Open tennis tournament, where British player Jacob Fearnley was among those forced to leave the court. Scoreboards and court cameras were also affected by the sudden loss of electricity.

Red Eléctrica later announced that power was beginning to be restored in the north and south of Spain, calling it a “key step” towards a full recovery. “We continue working to restore power,” the company stated, adding that all available resources were being deployed to resolve the issue.Meanwhile, Portuguese police reported that traffic lights across the country were out of service, and metro services in Lisbon and Porto had been suspended.

Train services were also disrupted, causing widespread travel chaos.Authorities and service operators in both countries continue efforts to fully restore power and normal operations.Melissa EnochThe post Major Power Outage Hits Spain And Portugal, Disrupting Transport And Events appeared first on Arise News.
