Aryssa Mahrt and Ashley Martinez scored in the first four minutes, starting Wisconsin on its way to a 3-1 win over Maine in the first round of the NCAA women’s soccer tournament Friday night in Madison, Wisconsin. Maine (13-2-3), which had a 13-game unbeaten streak snapped, cut its deficit to 2-1 when Lara Kirkby scored just 1:17 into the second half, assisted by Kristina Kelly. But Erin Connolly answered for Wisconsin (10-5-4) just over 10 minutes later, with an assist from Mahrt, who also set up Martinez’s goal.
MEN’S BASKETBALL QUINNIPIAC 58, MAINE 55: Amarri Monroe led the Bobcats with 21 points, and Quinnipiac (2-2) withstood a furious late rally by the Black Bears (2-2) in Hampden, Connecticut. Maine went on a 14-0 run, fueled by nine points from A.J.
Lopez, to cut a 15-point deficit to 56-55 with 41 seconds remaining. Quinnipiac’s Savion Lewis made a floater with 22 seconds left, and Maine missed two 3-pointers in the closing seconds. Lopez finished with 18 points and Jaden Clayton had 12 for the Black Bears.
