Now that’s what you call a flood! A57 flooded at Irlam, 1964 (Image: Newsquest) This was the scene on the A57 between Irlam and Eccles in June 1974 after a torrential downpour saw the road blocked by several feet of water as it passed under the railway line near Irlam Station. Only drivers of large lorries were brave enough to tackle it, running the risk of flooding their cabins, the water was so deep. For car lovers, there’s a great advert for an Austin Allegro on the bridge.
