A drug scandal at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital in Chennai led to the arrest of three Madras Medical College students for possessing marijuana and ketamine, sparking outrage. In a shocking incident, a major drug scandal rocked the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai, with police arresting three medical students for alleged drug possession and consumption inside a medical college campus. A fourth student involved in the incident remains at large.

The arrests were made after RGGGH Dean Dr E Theranirajan lodged a complaint with the police, suspecting drug abuse in the postgraduate men’s hostel of Madras Medical College (which is affiliated with RGGGH). Acting on the tip-off, police conducted a raid at the hostel room, where they discovered 149 grams of marijuana and four vials of ketamine. Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic used for medical purposes, is a controlled substance due to its potential misuse as a narcotic.

According to police, the students had been operating their illegal drug activity from the hostel for several years. Their actions were reportedly an open secret on the campus, with many aware of their activities but reluctant to report them. The brazen nature of the operation raised serious concerns about how students training to become doctors, tasked with saving lives, could engage in such illegal and dangerous behaviour.

Investigations revealed that the students sourced the marijuana from a supplier in the Kotturpuram area. Following the raid on the hostel, police tracked down the supplier and seized 1.3kg of marijuana from him.

He was subsequently arrested. The three arrested students, all from Madras Medical College, have been remanded in custody. Police are actively searching for the fourth student involved in the operation.

This incident sparked outrage and concern within the medical community and the general public. Questions are being raised about the security and oversight within one of the city’s premier medical institutions and how such an illegal operation was allowed to continue unnoticed for so long. The investigation is ongoing as police work to uncover the full extent of the drug network operating within the campus.
