Pop superstars Madonna and Elton John have finally “buried the hatchet” and ended their long-running feud. The pair were photographed together when Madonna went to watch Elton perform on Saturday Night Live on Saturday (5 April). Two days later, she took to Instagram to make their newfound friendship official.
“We finally buried the hatchet,” she wrote, alongside an image of them backstage, recalling having seen Elton perform while she was in high school. His “unforgettable” performance “changed the course of my life”, she wrote, Out reported.“I had always felt like an outsider growing up, and watching him on stage helped me understand it was OK to be different: to stand out, to take the road less-travelled.
In fact, it was essential.”Madonna. (Getty/Kevin Mazur)Referring to their decades-long feud, the “Vogue” singer said it “hurt me to know that someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist.
I didn’t understand it”. But she resolved to see him perform on SNL and went to “confront him”, adding: “When I met him, the first thing out of his mouth was, ‘forgive me’ and the wall between us fell down. Forgiveness is a powerful tool.
”The two of them were hugging “within minutes,” and Elton “told me [he] had written a song for me and wanted to collaborate. She finished the post by saying: “And you can tell everybody, this is your song,” the lyrics from what Elton has described as his most requested hit, “Your Song.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Madonna (@madonna)Soon after, Elton responded: “And thank you for forgiving me and my big mouth.
I’m not proud of what I said., particularly when I think about all the ground-breaking work you have done as an artist, paving the way for a generation of female artists to succeed and be true to themselves.“You were also one of the very first people to rise up against HIV/Aids in the 80s, bringing love and compassion to so many who desperately needed it.
“I’m grateful we can move forward. By pulling together, I’m hopeful we can make great things happen for those who really need support and have a lot of fun doing it.”Why had Madonna and Elton John been feuding? It began in 2002 when Elton criticised Madonna’s track for the film Die Another Day.
“It hasn’t got a tune. James Bond themes are usually very camp and this one’s different,” he was quoted as saying. Two years later, while accepting the gong for song-writing, he made matters worse by referring to her performance at the Q Awards, by saying: “Anyone who lip syncs in public on stage when you pay £75 to see them should be shot.
” The claim was denied by Madonna’s team. The next shots were fired in 2012 after Madonna claimed Lady Gaga had copied her style. Around the same time, Elton likened the Queen of Pop to a “fairground stripper”.
He was also caught saying: “Why is she such a nightmare? Sorry, her career is over. Her tour has been a disaster.”Elton later wrote in his memoir Me: “I used to make fun of her for lip-synching on stage but the problem really started when she ran Gaga down on an American chat show.
” He also called Madonna “ungracious and nasty”. But he also wrote, “Still, I shouldn’t have said it. I apologised.
”In 2013, the “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word” singer announced that the feud was over, telling Extra: “We were in a restaurant in France in the summer. She came in and I sent over a note. She was very gracious.
I apologised profusely because what I said should never have appeared in public. She accepted [the] apology and we bought her dinner. That’s over and done with.
”Ten years on, Elton said he was “deeply moved” that she used part of her Celebration Tour to pay tribute to those who lost their lives to Aids-related illnesses, saying: “Thank you, Madonna, for your advocacy and compassion, and for raising important awareness of the ongoing mission to end Aids.”Share your thoughts!
