Twelve districts in Macuata have pledged to raise $30,000 each to help improve education for the children of the province. Tui Labasa Ratu Jone Qomate, who chaired the Macuata Provincial Council meeting at Sasa Village on Friday, applauded the traditional leaders for this initiative. He said that if all districts contribute, an estimated total of $360,000 could be raised by the 2025 financial year.
“The leaders have raised concerns over the recent results of the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE), where approximately 6000 students failed,” Ratu Jone said. “We have an education committee, consisting of some retired teachers, who will look into how many of these 6000 students are from Macuata.” He added that at this point, they do not have detailed information on how many of the failed students are iTaukei.
“The funds will be allocated for educational programmes, including a potential scholarship scheme for students in need, and for those requiring extra educational support,” he said. Ratu Jone also highlighted findings from the iTaukei Affairs Board’s wellbeing survey last year, which revealed a high number of school dropouts, with many students failing to provide valid reasons to their parents. He emphasised the importance of parental support and urged traditional leaders to take a more active role in talking to children about the importance of education.
