A MACHETE has been seized and a man charged after a Coffs Harbour man's hand was severed during an alleged assault on Wednesday. Emergency services were called to a home on Toormina Place at Coffs Harbour about 6.
45am on Wednesday, where they found the man's left hand had been cut off during an alleged assault. Paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where he remains in a serious condition. Coffs/Clarence Police District officers launched an investigation and were told the man had allegedly been assaulted by two men who had forced their way into the unit.
About 9.45pm officers were patrolling South Grafton when they saw a vehicle without registration plates. When the driver allegedly failed to stop when directed, police initiated a pursuit.
The vehicle got bogged on playing fields a short time later and an 18-year-old man was arrested. A machete seized when the vehicle was searched has been sent for further examination. The man was taken to Grafton Police Station where he was charged with special aggravated break and enter commit serious indictable offence; cause grievous bodily harm with intent; police pursuit not stop and possession of a prohibited drug.
The man has been refused bail to appear in Grafton Local Court today. Two women aged 58 and 80, who were at the premises when the man's hand was cut off, were not injured. Madeline Link is a born and bred Novocastrian who started her career as a journalist in the New England North West in 2016.

The 59-year-old man whose hand was severed remains at John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
