M A Baby elected as General Secretary of CPI(M) in Madurai Party Congress

Mariam Alexander Baby, popularly known as M A Baby, was on Sunday elected as the General Secretary of the CPI(M) at the party’s 24th Congress in Madurai, succeeding Sitaram Yechury who passed away due to ill-health in September 2024. 71-year-old Baby is the second leader from Kerala to become the head of the CPI(M) after veteran E M S Namboodiripad. After Yechury’s sudden death in 2024, former general secretary Prakash Karat was named as the coordinator of the CPI(M) until a new leader was named.

A native Prakkulam in Kollam district in Kerala, Baby was Education Minister in Kerala and made his debut into politics with the CPI(M)’s student wing Student Federation of Indian (SFI). He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha twice..
